RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University senior guard Ebony Patterson (pictured, right) is out indefinitely after tearing her left Achilles tendon last week during an offseason workout. The L.C. Bird High School graduate underwent a surgical procedure and a timetable for her return has not been set.
"It's extremely disappointing to lose Ebony," said VCU Head Coach Beth Cunningham. "Being one of only two seniors, we were certainly counting on her experience and leadership to build on last year's success. I think it's difficult to say at this point what the timetable will be for a full recovery. We do understand though that it is an injury that requires significant time. However, I am confident Ebony will do her part to positively impact this team despite the injury."
Patterson was a key reserve for VCU during her first two seasons before earning a starting role last year. She averaged 5.6 points and 2.9 assists in 30 starts and helped the Rams to a program record third straight postseason appearance.
Already having to replace four seniors from last year's squad that reached the third round of the Postseason WNIT, VCU will now have to fill the void of a fifth. The Rams open the 2010-11 campaign at High Point on Nov. 12.
