RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University Head Coach Beth Cunningham has appointed Carolyn Riley to the position of Director of Women's Basketball Operations. Riley earns the promotion after spending the 2009-10 campaign as the program's Graduate Assistant.
"It will be great to have Carolyn join our staff in a full-time capacity," Cunningham said. "She was outstanding for our program last year in her role as Graduate Assistant as she pursued her Master's degree. Carolyn is a diligent worker and brings such positive energy with everything she does. She will be a real asset in an expanded role with our program."
"I am very excited for the opportunity to continue to be a part of the VCU Women's Basketball family," commented Riley. "After spending a year as the Graduate Assistant, I was able to experience first hand the passion and hard work of everyone. I feel very fortunate to continue to support such a great program, staff and team."
Prior to joining the Rams, Riley played four years of collegiate basketball with stops at Marymount University and Eastern Mennonite University. She averaged 9.7 points and 5.3 rebounds during her freshman season at Marymount in 2005-06. Riley then transferred to EMU where she registered 15.7 points and 6.1 boards per game as a sophomore, and contributed a league-best 16.4 points and 7.0 rebounds during her junior campaign. She returned to Marymount as a senior and helped lead the Saints to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in her career.
For her accomplishments on the court, Riley earned First Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference honors as a sophomore and second team All-State accolades as a junior.
A Warrenton, Va., native, Riley received her undergraduate degree in exercise science from Marymount in 2008 and recently completed her Master's degree at the VCU Center for Sport Leadership.
