GREENSBORO, N.C. – Head Coach Julian Spooner said early on this fall that he liked the way his Virginia Commonwealth University men's cross country team was coming together.
For the second straight meet, Spooner was proven right as the Black & Gold rolled to another team title, this time at the Greensboro Invitational, hosted at Hagan Stone Park.
"We ran really well and it's great to see we've won both the meets that we've run at this fall," Spooner said. "Hopefully we can carry this momentum with us as we near the conference meet."
Junior Walid Berkhedle (Toronto, Ontario) led a pack of four Rams that finished in spots 3-6 to beat out Conference USA power, Marshall, by nearly 10 points.
Berkhedle finished the eight-kilometer course in 25:34.2, while senior Piotr Dybas (Jaslo, Poland) finished just behind his teammate with a time of 25:48.7.
Sophomore Tyler Simmons (Manassas, Va.) rounded out the top five with a time of 26:08.3 and just behind him was junior Axel Mostrag (Krasnik, Poland), stopping the clock in 26:10.2.
Freshman Brendan Leavitt (Virginia Beach, Va.) continued to impress in just his first season with the Rams, earning a top-10 finish with a time of 26:46.6.
The Rams are back in action next Friday, competing at the Hampton Invitational.
