RICHMOND, Va. – Head Coach Jon Riley has added Thomas Sage as the Assistant Track and Field Coach.

Sage joins the Rams after a one-year stint as the Assistant Coach at the University of New Orleans, where he coached high jump, middle distance and helped with the multi-event student-athletes.

"I am extremely excited to have Tom Sage join our track and field staff," said head coach Jon Riley. "One of his biggest strengths is his versatility, having coached vertical jumps, sprints, hurdles and throws. He will have an immediate impact by adding a wealth of knowledge in those events areas and more importantly, I believe the athlete will love his passion for track and field. We look forward to his contributions and we are excited to welcome him to Ram Nation."

Prior to his time with the Privateer program, Sage worked under former head coach and three-time Olympian Tonja Buford-Bailey at the University of Illinois. In 2013, Sage joined Buford-Bailey at the University of Texas. With the Longhorns, Sage helped with sprints, hurdles and relays.

"I am excited to become part of the Ram Family," said Sage. "I have so much respect for Coach Riley, and the program he has built at VCU. He has surrounded himself with a great staff that are passionate about track and field. I feel truly blessed to have the opportunity to come in and help continue to develop champions."

Sage also spent time at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as a graduate assistant, where he helped coach the Islanders to seven school records.

A graduate of Marquette University, Sage qualified for conference championship all four years and was tabbed All-Conference USA Freshman of the Year. He also picked up All-Big East honors during his junior and senior year, and is ranked third all-time at Marquette in both the heptathlon and decathlon.
