RICHMOND, Va. – There's a friendly competition between juniors Brandon Ruffin and Ryan Coles of the VCU men's track & field squad. Both throwers have stepped up their game thanks to the other one pushing their limits.
This past weekend, it was Ruffin's turn to take the spotlight, breaking a 19-year old school record in the shot put. For his performance, the Chesapeake, Va. native was named Atlantic 10 Men's Track & Field Co-Performer of the Week.
Ruffin won the shot put at this past weekend's Mason Spring Invite with his record-breaking throw of 57' 8 ½", breaking the old record by nearly a foot and a half. The throw is currently ranked 31st in the East Region and should be strong enough to carry him into the NCAA East Preliminary Round in May.
He also added a top-six performance in the discus. After winning the shot put, he immediately turned around to throw 151' 9" in the discus, good for sixth place in the event.
Ruffin and his teammates will head to the Kentucky Relays this upcoming weekend.
