RICHMOND, Va. – The start of the indoor track & field season is a little over two months away, but preparation for that first meet is well underway for the VCU track & field squads.
The men's squad will be looking to continue to make strides at the Atlantic 10 Championships and NCAA Regional rounds. Head Coach Jon Riley and his staff will have 11 newcomers on the men's side.
Four throwers, three distance runners, two sprinters, two jumpers make up the new members of the Black & Gold.
Let's meet the new guys:
Kwaume Chatman, Throws (Granby High School – Norfolk, Va.)
Chatman competed in the shot put and discus at Granby. He will be looked upon to develop in the hammer throw for VCU.
Racheed Davis, Jumps (Ocean Lakes High School – Virginia Beach, Va.)
Davis finished 6th at the VHSL Indoor State Championships with a jump of 45-6.25. His career was highlighted with a 46-8 foot personal best earlier in the indoor season. Racheed will compete in both long and triple jump for the Rams.
Darius Green, Sprints (Hampton High School – Hampton. Va.)
Competed in 400 and 200m for Hampton high school. Green's bests in the 400 meters and the 200 meters are 49.70 and 22.51, respectively.
Blake Hills, Jumps (Fluvanna High School – Palmyra, Va.)
The highlight of Hills's career was a victory in the high jump at the 2013 Region II outdoor championships. His personal best in the high jump 6-4.
Tristan Ledbetter, Throws Deep Creek High School - Chesapeake, Va.)
Ledbetter competed in the shot put and discus. He will be looked upon to develop in the hammer throw for VCU.
Austin Lushinski, Distance (Stonebridge High School – Ashburn, Va.)
Lushinski ran long distance events at Stone Bridge High School. He will help out on the team in the longer distances. He has a PR in the 3200 of 10:02.56.
Andrew McIntyre, Sprints (Horsham High school – Horsham Pa.)
McIntyre ran a personal best of 11.07 in the 100 meters at the PIAA District 1 3A Championships.
Benjamin Melton, Throws (J.R. Tucker High School – Richmond, Va.)
Melton is a thrower specializing in the discus. His high school career was highlighted by a 172'11" personal best and placing second in the Virginia AAA Outdoor Championships in the discus. Milesplit ranked Ben among the top 100 senior discus throwers in the country.
Joseph Phillips-Manson, Throws (Danvers High School – Danvers, Mass.)
Phillips-Manson high school career was highlighted by winning the Emerging Elite section of the shot put at the New Balance Outdoor National Championships with his personal best 57'7", one inch off the meet record. This mark ranked him among the top 100 senior shot putters in the country, according to Milesplit.
Ben Sorensen, Distance (Mountain View High School – Stafford, Va.)
Sorensen is a 3A state qualifier in all of his events respectively. Ben is the 2013 Outdoor District Champion in the 1600M with a PR of 4:26.06. Ben is the 2013 Outdoor District & Regional Champion in the 3200M with a PR of 9:22.24. Ben will be a great addition to the team and with development he will make an impact.
Calvin Wood, Distance (Henrico High School - Henrico Va.)
Wood ran a host of events, including mid distances in high school and will be looking to find his strong suit with his athletic career here at VCU.
