Rams in Fifth Place After Day One of Atlantic 10 Championships

DAY 1 RESULTS

THE BASICS: The VCU Men's Track and Field team is in fifth place with 17 points after day one of the Atlantic 10 Track and Field Championships in Kingston, R.I. Host Rhode Island leads the event after the first day with 45 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Sophomore Brandon Ruffin, competing in the weight throw for just the fourth time, won the Atlantic 10 Championship in the weight throw with a personal record toss of 19.30-meters. Seniors Frank Afriyie (17.42-meters) and Luke Thomason (15.74-meters) placed fifth and ninth, respectively.
  • In the 5000-meter race, senior Brenden Leavitt placed sixth with a run of 14:48.61.
  • Sophomore Evan Morton and freshman Xavier Waller each placed in the top 10 in the men's heptathlon. Morton (2605) placed sixth, while Waller (2486 personal record) placed ninth. For the second time this season Morton broke the school record with his score
