BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Senior DeAngelo Wilson of the VCU men's track & field squad spent Wednesday night trying to take cover from tornadoes that were running rampant all over the state of Indiana.
Wilson got his chances to cause some damage of his own on Thursday and that's exactly what he did, blistering the track for a time of 10.47, good for the 14th best time in the 100-meter dash at the NCAA East Preliminary Round, hosted by the Indiana University.
The Richmond, Va. native is now part of a group of 24 that will run in the NCAA quarterfinals Friday evening. The top 12 times will advance to NCAA Championships in early June at Drake University.
"All my hard work, everything I've done over the past five years at VCU, it all comes down to this weekend," Wilson said. "I want to leave a legacy and this is my chance to do it. I still have to clean up my start, but I know I can do that tomorrow."
Wilson would become the first Ram to make a NCAA Championships appearance since 2006, when Davion Lambert advanced to the final meet.
The 100-meter dash quarterfinals are scheduled to get started at 6:15 p.m. EST.
