STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – While snow was
covering the streets of Richmond this past weekend, the Virginia
Commonwealth University men's track & field team was busy
heating up the track at the Penn State National Meet, where four
Rams tallied IC4A qualifying times.
"Overall it was a solid meet," Head Coach Julian Spooner. "We had some guys run good times and earn a spot in IC4As, which is always good, but as a coach you always think there is room for improvement."
Juniors Donnie Seward (Richmond, Va.) and Axel Mostrag (Krasnik, Poland) led the charge with third-place finishes and IC4A qualifying marks in the 500-meter dash and the 800-meter run, respectively.
For Seward, it was his second straight week earning a spot in the IC4As after his 200-meter dash performance last week at the Niswonger Invitational. This week, Seward posted a time of 1:04.32 in the 500-meter dash, good for third place.
Mostrag continued his strong season for the Black & Gold with a time of 1:50.90 in the 800-meter, good for third place and a spot in the IC4A Championships.
Senior DeAngelo Wilson (Richmond, Va.) also earned a IC4A spot in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.11, as well as sophomore Tyler Simmons (Manassas, Va.) in the 1000-meter with a time of 2:28.21.
Freshman Justin Kendall (Richmond, Va.) rounded out the strong showings on the weekend with a personal best of 4:21.90 in the mile run.
The Rams return to the track next weekend, when they travel to New York, N.Y. to compete in the prestigious New Balance Invitational.
