TORRE NAMED MOST OUTSTANDING ROOKIE, KOSTIN TABBED COACH OF THE YEAR

RICHMOND, Va. – Six members of VCU men's tennis earned All-Atlantic 10 accolades, the league announced on Tuesday afternoon, highlighted by freshman Inigo Torre Martin winning Most Outstanding Rookie Performer honors. Head Coach Paul Kostin was named Coach of the Year for both men's and women's programs.

Torre Martin opened his VCU career in impressive fashion, leading the Rams with an 18-7 singles record. He was even sharper during the dual season, sporting a singles mark of 15-5, including a 7-0 record when playing at the No. 4 position. The freshman collected a doubles record of 12-8, but really hit his stride playing with junior Arvid Noren, with whom he went 7-3. The Bilbao, Spain product earned A-10 Rookie of the Week honors five times this season, and was also named to the All-Atlantic 10 Second Team. 

Noren, who settled into the No. 1 role for the Rams, was named to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team. He finished the year with a 14-11 singles record, including a blazing 11-6 mark in dual play. The Pitea, Sweden native also led the Black and Gold with a 16-12 doubles record, with a 14-6 mark in dual matches. Noren, who was honored by the conference for the second year in a row after making the Second Team last season, was also named to the All-Academic Team.

Junior Vitor Lima joined Noren on the First Team. Lima, who played exclusively at the top three singles positions and the No. 1 doubles position, notched a 12-13 singles record and a 10-11 doubles record. This is the third consecutive year Lima has made the First Team. 

Sophomores Javier Amantegui and Ignacio Rivero Crespo and junior Philip Mobius joined Torre Martin on the Second Team. Amantegui was a consistent presence for the Rams, notching a 17-14 singles record and a 14-14 doubles mark. Rivero Crespo was effective in limited playing time, recording a 13-8 singles mark, including an 8-4 record in dual play. Mobius was the sixth Ram with double-figure singles wins, collecting an 11-14 record. 

Rivero Crespo, who earned Second Team honors for the second straight year, also joined Noren on the All-Academic Team.

Kostin was named Coach of the Year after leading VCU to its second consecutive Atlantic 10 championship, 19th total conference championship, and 22nd NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. The Rams finished the year at 16-10 and did not drop a match against conference foes all year.
