RICHMOND, Va. – VCU men's tennis earned a pair of weekly honors from the Atlantic 10 on Wednesday, as sophomore Javier Amantegui was named Co-Player of the Week and freshman Inigo Torre Martin was named Rookie of the Week for the fifth time this season.
Amantegui played a crucial role in VCU's dominant wins over William & Mary and George Mason last week, winning both singles and doubles matches in each victory. In the 4-1 win over the Tribe on April 11, he teamed up with junior Vitor Lima to beat Alec Miller and Tristan Bautil 6-3 at No. 1 doubles before beating Louis Newman in straight sets at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 7-5. In the 4-0 shutout victory over the Patriots on April 13, he and Lima again triumphed at No. 1 doubles with a 6-3 win over Pally Ray and Daniel Gutierrez. The Madrid, Spain product then dispatched Gutierrez at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-1.

An undefeated doubles week and a quick singles victory marked another successful week for Torre Martin. In the 4-1 win over William & Mary on April 11, Torre Martin and junior Arvid Noren defeated Brenden Volk and Michael Chen 6-4 at No. 2 doubles to clinch the first point of the match. The Bilbao, Spain product doubled the lead with a commanding 6-4, 6-2 win over Finbar Talcott at No. 4 singles. Two days later, in a 4-0 win over George Mason he and Noren took down Jakob Nielsen and Edward Ayers at No. 2 doubles 6-1.
The two Spaniards share the team lead with 16 singles victories apiece. They have led VCU to a 13-9 record, including a 4-0 mark against A10 opponents. The Rams close out the regular season with a home match against Washington and Lee on Saturday, April 21 at 1 p.m.
