RICHMOND, Va. – VCU men's tennis swept the Atlantic 10's weekly awards, as the league named sophomore Javier Amantegui the Player of the Week and freshman Inigo Torre Martin the Rookie of the Week on Wednesday.
Amantegui completed an undefeated week in both singles and doubles play. In a 4-0 win over conference foe Saint Louis on March 2, Amantegui and junior Arvid Noren defeated John and Justin Nogalski at No. 2 doubles 6-3. The Madrid, Spain product then clinched the match for the Rams with a 6-0, 6-4 win over John Nogalski at No. 2 singles. Although VCU lost to Utah on March 3, Amantegui defeated Egbert Wevernik at No. 3 singles 7-6, 6-3.
Torre Martin and fellow freshman Timo Zgraggen clinched the doubles point against Saint Louis with a 6-2 win over Oscar Pachon and Kenji Yanaba on Court 3. The Bilbao, Spain product then notched the first singles point of the day with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 victory over Pachon at No. 4 singles.
This is the first weekly honor of Amantegui's career, and Torre Martin's second Rookie of the Week award this season. Amantegui and Torre Martin lead the team in singles wins, with 13 and 11, respectively.
The Rams return to action on March 17 at Elon with first serve set for 10 a.m.
