RICHMOND, Va. – VCU men's tennis swept the Atlantic 10's weekly awards, as junior Arvid Noren was named the conference's Player of the Year and freshman Timo Zgraggen was named Rookie of the Week on Wednesday afternoon.
Noren won both of his singles and doubles matches across a 2-0 weekend for the Rams. On Jan. 26, Noren won a three-set battle against Dayton's Zach Berry at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 to help spur a 4-3 comeback victory over the Flyers. He also teamed up with sophomore Javier Amantegui to beat Jordan Benjamin and Theodor Jener at No. 2 doubles, 7-6. In Sunday's 4-2 win over Penn, Noren breezed through his No. 3 singles match against Dmitry Shatalin, winning 6-1, 6-3. He once again teamed up with Amantegui to win at No. 2 doubles, beating RJ Sands and Nicholai Westergaard 6-4.
Zgraggen continued his strong debut season with the Rams this weekend, going 2-0 in singles matches and tallying a doubles victory. On Jan. 26, he defeated Lorenzo Rollhauser 6-2, 6-3 to contribute to the comeback win. On Jan. 28, his three-set victory over Westergaard (7-5, 4-6, 7-6) clinched the match win for the Rams. He had previously teamed up with last week's A-10 Rookie of the Week, Inigo Torre Martin, to beat Penn's Aleks Huryn and Max Cancilla at No. 3 doubles, 7-5.
VCU is scheduled to play next on Feb. 10, when they host East Tennessee State at the Thalhimer Tennis Center at 10 a.m.
