The short story: The Rams were dominant in the first two matches of the 2017 campaign Friday Jan. 20 at the Thalhimer Tennis Center. The Black and Gold swept both Howard and Morgan State on the opening day of the VCU 4-1 Invitational.

FIRST SERVE

  • The Rams combined for an overall 8-0 record in singles play. The Black and Gold remained undefeated in doubles play as well to end the day 2-0. 
  • Seniors Daryl Monfils and Marten Jonsson finished with a 1-0 record in singles play in the match against Howard. The pair rallied after a second set loss to defeat Morgan State's Jeremy Field and O. Labik, 6-4, 2-6, 10-3.
  • Freshman Javier Amantegui earned his first career win in singles play. He triumphed over Morgan State's Sagar Sathyanarayanan to win, 6-0, 6-0.
  • Junior Louis Ishizaka finished the day with a 2-0 record and won both of his matches in consecutive sets.
  • Sophomore Arvid Noren also compiled a 2-0 record. He defeated Howard's Spencer Kelly in consecutive sets and won his second match by a Morgan State Default.
  • Vitor Lima earned his first wins in singles and doubles play as well. He and fellow sophomore Philip Mobius defeated Howard's Karim Shokeir and Sagar Ragu, 6-1, 6-4 to earn the first point of the match.
