ATHENS, Ga. – Senior Alexis Heugas of the VCU Men's Tennis team had beaten eight opponents ranked in the top-100 entering the NCAA Singles Championship.
In Wednesday's opening round, Heugas nearly made it nine with his most challenging opponent yet in 12th-ranked Nik Scholtz from Ole Miss. Heugas battled Scholtz in a three-set thriller, but ultimately dropped a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 decision to his counterpart from Ole Miss.
"Alexis played his heart out against one of the top ranked players in the country. It was tough conditions with the wind picking up at times, but he battled and showed he could play with some of the best out there. I'm proud of him and look forward to him and Nick opening up doubles play tomorrow," Head Coach Paul Kostin said.
It was Heugas' first appearance at the NCAA Singles Championship.
The Jurancon, France concludes his VCU singles career with 72 wins in just three seasons.
Heugas is back in action on Thursday when he opens up play in the NCAA Doubles Championship with partner Nick Jones. The duo battle Nevada's Robert Allen and Victor Ouvrard.
