The Basics

  • Score: #47 UNCW 4, #37 VCU 3
  • Records: VCU (12-9), UNCW (10-6)
  • Location: Thalhimer Tennis Center inside the HDL, Inc. Athletic Village – Richmond, Va.
  • The Short Story: Despite falling behind early, the VCU men's tennis team battled back to force a deciding doubles point, but ultimately ended up falling to UNCW, 4-3. Senior Alejandro Argente, sophomore Michal Voscek and freshman Jean-Baptiste Mateo all recorded singles victories for the Black & Gold.
How It Happened
  • With impending weather, the teams decided to play singles action first. UNCW would take advantage, winning three of the first four singles matches.
  • The lone win in that span came from Argente, who toppled Pedro Mol, 6-3, 6-4 at the #2 singles spot.
  • Baptiste-Mateo continued his strong debut season for the Rams with his 19th singles victories of the year, 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 at the fifth singles spot to bring the Black & Gold within one at 3-2.
  • Voscek forced the doubles action with a thrilling three set victory, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 over Kaue Pereira at the fourth doubles spot.
  • Alexis Heugas and Nick Jones got the Rams started on the right track in doubles with a quick 8-1 win at #1 doubles, but UNCW answered with 8-4 wins at both the #2 and #3 doubles spots to take the match.
