WENNAKOSKI, HEUGAS AND MCCLOSKEY HEADED TO SINGLES AND DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Although, the NCAA Tournament begins this weekend, three members of the VCU men's tennis team have already booked their tickets to Urbana, Illinois for the NCAA Championships.
Senior Max Wennakoski, junior Alexis Heugas and freshman Dylan McCloskey earned automatic berths into the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, which will be conducted on May 22-27 and will be hosted by the University of Illinois.
Wennakoski earned the Atlantic 10's singles berth after an outstanding senior season that netted him A-10 Most Outstanding Players honors, as well as a ranking fifth all-time on VCU's single-season wins chart with 32.
The Helsinki, Finland native was ranked in the top-30 of the ITA singles rankings for much of the spring, reaching as high as #14 in the country. He is 32-9 overall and 20-4 this spring, 12 of which came at the top spot in VCU's singles lineup.
Heugas and McCloskey earned the conference's doubles berth after posting an 11-6 mark at the top spot in VCU's double lineup. The duo is currently ranked 44th in the ITA doubles rankings and have won three of its last five matches.
Last year, Heugas teamed with Antoine Baroz in the NCAA Doubles Tournament and earned an All-American nod after reaching the Elite Eight.
