CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Junior Max Wennakoski (pictured) was impressive in his first action of the fall season, defeating a trio of seeded players on his way to winning the blue singles draw at the 2011 UVa Ranked Plus One Invitational over the weekend.
Wennakoski topped No. 2 Maros Horny from Maryland (6-4, 6-3) in his first match before beating East Tennessee State's Roger Ordeig (6-4, 6-4) in the quarterfinal round. He then defeated third-seeded Justin Shane from Virginia (6-2, 6-0) in straight sets in the semifinals before edging No. 4 Nick Sayer from Radford (6-7, 6-4, 7-5) in the final.
In other action, sophomore Alexis Heugas fell to fifth-seeded Francisco Dias from George Washington (6-4, 6-1) in the white singles draw, but he sustained an injury which prevented him from finishing play in his bracket. Heugas' injury also kept he and Wennakoski, who defeated Louisville's Robert Hall/Michael Lippens (8-4) in their opener of the orange doubles draw, from facing second-seeded UVa duo of Jarmere Jenkins/Ian Uriguen in the semifinal.
VCU is back in action Oct. 7-9 at the Hampton Roads Invitational in Newport News, Va.
