HELSINKI, Finland – While most college students are laying on beaches and hanging out with friends, rising junior Max Wennakoski has been hard at work on the tennis courts.
A standout this past year for the VCU men's tennis team, Wennakoski carried his stellar play into the summer by winning the 2011 Finnish National Open Championship this past weekend.
The Helsinki native toppled Lauri Kiiski in the championship match by a tally of 6-4, 6-7, 6-4.
"It's good to see Max still having success during the summer," VCU Head Coach Paul Kostin said. "He's going to be a big part of our team next year, so it's great to see him playing well."
This past spring for the Rams, Wennakoski was the permanent resident of the second spot in the lineup, posting a career-high 23 wins on the year.
His 20-5 spring record helped the Black & Gold capture the CAA regular season championship and an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament.
