RICHMOND, Va. – You could say last week was a pretty good week for the Virginia Commonwealth University men's tennis team.
It started with a 5-2 home win over ACC foe, N.C. State. It continued with the Rams jumping 17 spots in the latest ITA poll into the top-60. It was capped off with both the CAA Singles and Doubles weekly awards being handed to the Black & Gold.
"We knew we had to play some of our best tennis to beat a pretty good N.C. State team and fortunately we did just that," Head Coach Paul Kostin said. "However, what we need to do is make sure we continue to stay hungry and focused every time we play a match. We can't get comfortable where we are at, we're not good enough to do that yet."
On the singles side, senior Tim Johanssen was named CAA Co-Player of the Week after battling his way to a 7-6 (6), 7-6 (1) victory 104th-ranked Jaime Pulgar at the top singles spot.
On the year, Johanssen is 18-4 overall and 11-1 this spring.
On the doubles side, the sophomore tandem of Jaime Vazquez Catoria and Camill Salomon earned the weekly award with their 9-7 win at the top doubles spot to secure the doubles point for the Black & Gold in their 5-2 upset win of the Wolfpack.
So far this spring, the duo is 5-4 with all nine matches coming in the top doubles position.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Georgia State in a CAA match. First serve is set for 3 p.m. at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.
