RICHMOND, Va. – After a tough loss to Cornell on Friday, Head Coach Paul Kostin turned to the lone senior on the Virginia Commonwealth University men's tennis team for some guidance.

Senior Tim Johannsen responded to his coach's challenge by leading the Rams to a hard-fought 6-1 home victory over the Eagles of Winthrop University on Sunday afternoon at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.

"I was very disappointed by the way we played on Friday," Kostin said. "Today was better, but I still think we have a lot of work to do."

Johannsen and freshman Antoine Baroz paired to grab a quick 8-3 doubles victory, which was followed by two more doubles victories by the Black & Gold to earn a sweep of the doubles point.

Junior Filip Svensson bounced back after a tough loss on Friday to earn a straight set victory over Naday Ruppin at the fifth singles spot, while Johannsen kept the momentum going in VCU's favor with a clean 6-3, 6-2 win over Sergey Belov at #1 singles.

Winthrop would pick up a point at the second singles spot, but wins by Camill Salomon, Jaime Vazquez Catoira and Alejandro Argente secured the win for the Black & Gold.

The Rams return to action next Friday when they travel to Duke to battle the 14th-ranked Blue Devils in a 6 p.m. showdown.
