RICHMOND, Va. – There were three new faces in the lineup for the Virginia Commonwealth University men's tennis team in its 2011 season opener, but the results were much the same as the Rams smashed their cross-town rival, Richmond, 7-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Thalhimer Tennis Center.

"I challenged our guys before the match to really show me what they are made off and how they want the year to go," Head Coach Paul Kostin said. "We still have a lot of work to do, but it's always good to start with a win like today."

All six singles matches were decided in straight sets, while none of the VCU doubles gave up more than three games.

Sophomores Jordan Dyke and Jaime Vazquez Catoira got things started by sweeping Richmond's Jesse Feder and Justin Baker, 8-0, in the third doubles spot. Junior Filip Svensson and sophomore Max Wennakoski blew past Sebastien Fauchet and Zach Carl, 8-3, while senior Tim Johannsen and freshman Antoine Baroz also picked up an 8-3 win at the top doubles spot.

Svensson quickly pushed the VCU lead to 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-4 singles victory over Carl in the fifth spot, while Baroz started his Black & Gold career with a convincing 6-4, 6-1 win over Baker at the fourth position.

Johannsen followed by dropping Fauchet, 6-3, 6-2, before Vazquez Catoira secured the Rams victory with a hard-fought 7-6 (2), 6-3 over A.J. Nelson.

The Rams are back in action this weekend with the annual VCU 4-1 Invitational, beginning with a 12 p.m. showdown with Georgetown.
