CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – With the graduation of nationally-ranked Thibaut Charron from last year's Colonial Athletic Association Championship squad, the Virginia Commonwealth University men's tennis program is looking for a new leader.
At the squad's first fall showing, it was clear that several returners are ready to try and take that next step after a combined singles record of 10-4 at this past weekend's UVA Fall Classic in Charlottesville.
Junior Filip Svensson (Angelholm, Sweden) was the standout for the Black & Gold, posting a 4-0 mark for the weekend with all four victories coming in straight sets. He won the Red Singles Bracket with a decisive 6-0, 6-1 win over Alberto Rojas of Elon.
Sophomore Camill Salomon (Limoges, France) also had a strong weekend with a run to the Gold Bracket finals after three consecutive straight set victories to open the weekend.
Classmate Max Wennakoski (Helsinki, Finland) played in the top bracket and tallied a 6-2, 6-2 win over Tobais Fanselow, Old Dominion's top returner from last year, as well as a 6-4, 6-4 win over Anthony Gautheir of Cornell.
VCU returns to on Friday, October 8th when they participate in the ODU Fall Collegiate Invitational.
