RAMS WRAP UP 2010 SEASON WITH 6-1 WIN OVER SOUTH ALABAMA
NORFOLK, Va. – There is something to
say about taking momentum into a conference tournament.
The Virginia Commonwealth University men's tennis team did just
that on Sunday by blowing past the Jaguars of South Alabama, 6-1,
in the regular season finale at Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the
campus of Old Dominion.
Senior Thibaut Charron (Sens, France) teamed with
freshman Krisztian Krocsko (Budapest, Hungary) got
things started on the right track by picking up an 8-6 win at #1
singles. Junior Tim Johannsen (Hohenlockstedt,
Germany) and freshman Camill Salomon (Limoges,
France) won at #2 doubles, and the duo of Filip
Svennson (Angelholm, Sweden) and Max Wennakoski
(Helsinki, Finland) wrapped up the doubles sweep for the
Black & Gold.
The singles side would be no different as Krocsko blew past
Christian Kuehne, 6-3, 6-2 at #3 singles to push VCU's lead to
2-0.
Charron registered his 21st win of the season with a 6-3, 6-4 win
over Romain Bocaert at #1 singles. The 21 wins is a career-high for
the lone senior on this year's squad. Wennakoski grabbed a 6-3, 2-1
lead before Alexandre Bernard retired at #4 singles to lock up the
win for the Black & Gold.
Svensson and Salomon also notched singles win on the day. Svensson
ends the season having won four of his last five singles
matches.
The Black & Gold will now take the week to prepare for the
upcoming CAA Tournament next weekend. Seeding will be announced
late Monday afternoon.
