RICHMOND, Va. – VCU's Siad Haji and Mario Sequeira were honored with the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week awards as announced by the conference on Monday. It marks the second time VCU has swept the weekly awards with Jared Greene and Sequeira earning the honors on Sept. 24. Haji also earned TopDrawerSoccer's Player of the Week, announced on Tuesday.
Haji and Sequeira helped lift VCU to back-to-back home wins over UMass and Duquesne. The Rams won both A-10 contests by a score of 2-0 and lifted their conference record to 3-0.
Haji, a junior midfielder from Manchester, N.H., guided VCU to a victory over UMass by scoring two second-half goals within a six-minute span. The first goal came when he received a pass from Jared Greene, dribbled downfield and scored on a long-range effort from 25 yards out. His second goal was also on a long-range effort on an assist from Peter Pearson. Haji registered two assists in the 2-0 victory over Duquesne.
Sequeira, a sophomore goalkeeper from Costa Rica, recorded his seventh clean sheet of the season after recording seven saves in the victories over UMass and Duquesne. Sequeira registered a clutch save in the match against UMass when they were awarded a penalty kick. That save made it onto ESPN SportsCenter Top 10 Plays at No. 3 and helped the Rams preserve the lead.
VCU looks to keep its perfect record in conference play when it travels to St. Louis on Oct. 10 and George Washington on Oct. 13.
