RICHMOND – Men’s Soccer freshman goalkeeper Mario Sequeira put the world on fire Saturday night, as he helped earn VCU their biggest win of the season so far, a 1-0 double overtime win #15 nationally-ranked UNC Wilmington. Because of his stellar play in net, Sequeira netted himself Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
Sequeira earned his second collegiate shutout in as many games, and did it in grand fashion Saturday night. He shut out No. 15 nationally-ranked UNC Wilmington, making seven saves on the game. The Rams would earn the 1-0 win in double overtime. His performance against UNC Wilmington was even more impressive as the Rams played the final 55 minutes with only three defenders instead of the usual four defenders, due to a player disqualification.
Also earning awards was Rhode Island’s Chae Brangman who earned Offensive Player of the Week, while Davis Smith from UMass earned Rookie of the Week.
The Rams return to the field this Wednesday night, October 4, as they play host to Davidson at Sports Backers Stadium in their first conference matchup of the season. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
