RICHMOND, Va.— The VCU men's soccer team enters this fall looking for its third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. A significant piece to the past two NCAA berths was recognized this week as Dennis Castillo was named a preseason third-team All-American by collegesoccernews.com.
"Dennis is one of the more professional and hardworking college players that I've worked with," Head Coach Dave Giffard said. "He can play as a center back, a right back or even as a defensive midfielder. He has scored 12 goals in his first two years with us as a defender and is one of the most impactful players in the country."
This is just one more recognition for the junior from Costa Rica, who played this summer with the U-23 PDL team affiliated with the Portland Timbers. He was also chosen to play in the 2014 MLS Homegrown Game, a showcase game that took place during MLS All-Star Weekend.
Last year, Castillo earned his second straight All-Atlantic 10 honor, as well as a spot on the All-Mid Atlantic Region and All-State First Teams. Six of his 12 career goals have proven to be game-winners, including the decisive goals against two of the past three national champions last year, Indiana and Akron, last fall.
Castillo and the Rams will take on William & Mary on Friday, August 22 in an exhibition game, then will open the regular season the following Friday, August 29 against Farleigh Dickinson as a part of the VCU Invitational.
