RICHMOND, Va. – After being selected by the Montreal Impact in the third round of January's Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft, former Ram Juan Arbelaez has inked a deal to join the Richmond Kickers.
Arbelaez will play alongside former VCU teammate Joseph Haboush as well as former Ram Gerson Dos Santos (2006-08).
"We are fortunate to sign another talented VCU product," Richmond Kickers Director of Soccer Leigh Cowlishaw said in a team statement. "Juan will be a great asset to the squad as he is comfortable in both the right defense and right midfield positions. He is a very attack-minded player and has shown an enthusiastic attitude during pre-season. We expect him to compete for a starting position right away."
The Oakwood, Ga. native only spent a pair of seasons with the Black and Gold, but was a valuable part of the Rams' success. During his two years, Arbelaez scored a goal and added five assists for seven points from his midfield position.
This past season, Arbelaez helped lead the Rams to 12 victories, the most since 2007, and a No. 25 ranking in the final NSCAA Poll. The Rams qualified for the NCAA Tournament and were a national seed for the first time since 2004.
Prior to VCU, Arbelaez spent two seasons at Georgia Perimeter College, where as a freshman with the Jags, he scored eight goals and added 11 assists.
