CASTILLO AND GUATEMALA ADVANCE TO ROUND OF 16 IN UNDER-20 WORLD CUP

RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Commonwealth University men's soccer program is set to begin practice this week, but one player will be missing in action. Sophomore midfielder Jose Carlos Castillo (Guatemala City, Guatemala) will continue play in the Under-20 World Cup with his home country of Guatemala as the team advanced to the Round of 16.

After suffering defeats to Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, the Guatemalans closed out group play with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Croatia; the victory enabled Guatemala to advance to the Round of 16 as one of the best third-place sides in the 24-team tournament.

Guatemala is scheduled to take on Portugal in a contest scheduled for Tuesday, August 9th, at 5:45 p.m. Portugal won Group B with victories over Cameroon and New Zealand, plus a draw with Uruguay. Guatemala faces a stiff challenge as Portugal has yet to concede a goal in the tournament.
