The short story: Redshirt junior forward Issac Vann poured in a game-high 18 points, and VCU opened up the second half on a 16-0 run on the way to a win over Wichita State Saturday.

OPENING TIP

  • Vann scored 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 2-of-4 from three-point range in a team-high 32 minutes
  • Junior guard Marcus Evans supplied 15 points, five assists and three rebounds in 30 minutes of action for VCU, while sophomore forward Marcus Santos-Silva provided 10 points, five rebounds and three blocks
  • VCU junior guard De'Riante Jenkins added 15 points on 6-of-15 shooting in addition to a team-high six rebounds in 27 minutes
  • Forward Markis McDuffie led the Shockers with 16 points on 5-of-15 shooting

THE DIFFERENCE

  • The Rams started the second half hot, after a Santos-Silva layup sparked a 16-0 run that put VCU on top 53-34 with 12 minutes remaining in the second half. The Shockers never seriously threatened again
  • VCU held Wichita State without a point for the first 7:50 of the second half
  • After falling behind 7-2 early in the first half, VCU fought back to take a 10-9 lead with just over 15 minutes remaining in the period
  • With the game tied at 30-30 with 3:04 remaining in the first half, Vann hit a 3-pointer that sparked a 5-0 run to put the Rams on top 35-30 late in the period
  • VCU entered the half leading 37-34
  • The Rams shot .500 (28-of-56) from the field led by as many as 19
  • VCU turned 17 Wichita State turnovers into 13 points, scored 34 points in the paint and owned an 16-10 advantage in assists
