The short story: Redshirt junior guard Marcus Evans scored 14 points to lead VCU, but Old Dominion rallied past the Rams Wednesday night in Norfolk with a strong second half effort.

OPENING TIP

  • Evans knocked down 5-of-13 from the field and 3-of-4 at the free throw line
  • Sophomore forward Marcus Santos-Silva added seven points, nine rebounds and a block down low for the Rams, while redshirt junior wing Issac Vann contributed nine points and a pair of assists
  • B.J. Stith scored 14 of his game-high 21 points in the second half to lead Old Dominion
  • Ahmad Caver also supplied 13 for the Monarchs

THE DIFFERENCE

  • ODU dominated the second half to erase a 12-point VCU halftime lead
  • The Monarchs shot .467 (14-of-30) in the final 20 minutes and outrebounded the Rams 25-11 after intermission
  • VCU, which built a 17-point lead midway through the first half, shot .273 (6-of-22) in the second, including 0-of-9 from behind the arc
  • After chipping away for more than 12 minutes, Stith gave ODU its first lead, at 47-46, when he buried a fadeaway 3-pointer at the end of the shot clock at the 7:38 mark. VCU tied the game again on two occasions, but Caver's traditional 3-point play with 5:29 provided Old Dominion the lead for good at 52-49. VCU missed its final nine field goal attempts down the stretch as ODU expanded its lead.
  • The Rams held Old Dominion to 7-of-30 (.233) shooting in the first half. Meanwhile, VCU hit 6-of-11 attempts from beyond the 3-point line in the opening period. Senior forward Michael Gilmore gave the Rams their largest lead of the game, at 32-15, when he banked home a 3-pointer from the right wing with 2:37 left in the period
