RICHMOND, Va. – Over the past five years, "Havoc" has served as a rallying point for the growing legions of VCU basketball fans across the country. This year, those legions will feel closer to their beloved Rams than ever before.
Seventeen of VCU's 18 Atlantic 10 Conference games will appear on national television in 2014-15, the league announced on Wednesday. In all, VCU's 23 regular season national TV contests shatter's last year record of 21.
"Our fans have always done a terrific job of creating a frenzied atmosphere at the Siegel Center," Head Coach Shaka Smart said. "This type of exposure allows people across the country to see what VCU and Havoc are all about."
Wednesday's announcement guarantees VCU a fourth straight season with at least 20 nationally televised games. The Rams' 11 regular season games on the ESPN family of networks are also a program record, breaking last year's mark of 10.
In addition to the conference games, the non-conference games against Toledo, Villanova, Michigan/Oregon, Virginia and Northern Iowa will all be on national TV.
More VCU games are expected to be televised through the Rams' regional and local television partners. Those announcements will follow in the coming weeks.
