NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Through his first seven games, freshman JeQuan Lewis was averaging 3.9 points per game, 1.6 assists and 1.1 rebounds per game, while shooting 1-of-6 from long range. A trip home to Nashville turned the tide for Lewis who is averaging 11.0 points, 2.0 assists and 2.0 rebounds in the three games since.
This past week, Lewis played a critical role in VCU's two home wins over Eastern Kentucky and Old Dominion, averaging 10.5 points per game. His stellar performance earned him Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors.
In Thursday's win over Eastern Kentucky, the Dickson, Tenn. native came off the bench to spark a late first-half run with two 3-pointers en route to a career-high 13 points. He finished 4-of-7 from the field and 3-of-6 from long range.
After the game, Head Coach Shaka Smart said, "We don't win the game without him, in fact we don't win the last two games without him. He's shown a lot of maturity in the past week. He's a kid who's going to keep getting better. His attitude and approach have been terrific."
On Sunday, Lewis chipped in eight points and a career-high four rebounds in VCU's 69-48 defeat of in-state rival Old Dominon.
For the season, Lewis is averaging 6.0 points, 1.7 assists and 1.4 rebounds, while shooting 50-percent from the field and a team-leading 38.9-percent from long range.
Lewis and the Rams hit the road this week when they take on Northern Iowa on Saturday afternoon. Game time in Cedar Rapids is set for 12 p.m. EST. The game can be seen on ESPNU.
