This summer, young fans of the Rams will get the chance to see what it is like to play on their favorite team, including being given pointers the coach himself. Shaka Smart, Head Coach of the VCU Men's Basketball team, is hosting three different summer camps for students ranging in age from 3rd to 12th grade.
Those participating in any of the various clinics will get the ultimate locker room treatment, working hands on with Coach Smart and the rest of his VCU coaching staff. All camps will take place at the Stuart C. Siegel Center, with the earliest beginning June 25th.
The Shaka Smart 2011 Basketball Camp will run three sessions:
- Session 1 – June 27-July 1
- Session 2 – July 11-July 15
- Session 3 – July 25-July 29
Coach Smart says he believes the camp to be beneficial to players at all skill levels.
"My staff and I will teach sound basketball fundamentals for beginners, provide a competitive environment for more advanced players, and give you the skills and knowledge necessary to become a more complete player," Smart said.
These sessions include lunch every day, a camp T-shirt, and camp basketball. Daily schedules will include drills and fundamentals, individual competitions, presentations from guest speakers, contests, 3-on-3 and 1-on-1 play, and 5-on-5 league play. Participants need to include a $250 tuition fee, and completed application.
For more competitive players Coach Smart will be holding two different day camps, the 2011 Team Camp, and the Shaka Smart Elite Camp (only for high school age players).
The 2011 Team Camp will take place on Saturday, June 25, 2011. The registration fee is $300, which guarantees 3 games. Games will be officiated by high school officials, and varsity teams at any level are welcome (including JV and AAU teams).
Each team has a limit of 10 players ($30 charge for each additional player over 10 per team). The deadline to register is June 17.
The Shaka Smart Elite Camp will be held on Sunday, June 26, 2011. Participants will work 1-on-1 with Coach Smart and staff from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. There is a $50 fee per camper (which includes lunch and a T-shirt).
