RICHMOND, Va. – At this time of year almost every store in the country is running deals to help make shopping for the holiday a little easier. The Rams decided to join party and offer a 2-for-1 this upcoming Saturday with the first doubleheader of the season at the Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
The VCU men's basketball team will get the action started at 2 p.m. with a showdown against the Green Wave of Tulane, followed by a women's basketball in-state rivalry when the Black & Gold battle Longwood. One ticket will get you into both games.
Both squads will be returning to the floor for the first time in a week, spending the past seven days focusing on the academic side of being a student-athlete with final exam week.
Head Coach Shaka Smart and the men's squad will be looking to bounce back from a tough 72-60 road setback to Richmond last Saturday. The Rams have won five straight games following a loss and have only lost back-to-back games four times in the past five years.
Last year, the Black & Gold traveled to New Orleans and gutted out a 78-77 victory at Tulane behind then-junior Jamie Skeen's 10 points. It was Skeen's first appearance as a Ram after transferring from Wake Forest.
Beth Cunningham and the women's team will be looking to return to the win column after a 68-65 road loss against a very talented Charlotte squad. Junior Courtney Hurt continues to be a force, ranking in the top five in the country in scoring, rebounding and double-doubles.
Hurt will look to repeat her performance against the Lancers last year when she tallied 17 points and five rebounds in a 84-64 win in Farmville.
Doors at the Siegel Center will open at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
