The short story: Freshman Ian Peng fired a second-round 70 to lead VCU to and eighth-place finish at the rain-soaked Stitch Intercollegiate at MacGregor Downs Country Club. Originally scheduled for 54 holes, Saturday's third round was canceled due to inclement weather.

FIRST TEE

  • Peng shot 75 and 70 in consecutive rounds to become VCU's top finisher for the second time this spring. He kicked off his second round with a birdie on hole No. 13, a 404-yard par 4
  • Peng carded six birdies in all in the second round and leaped from 48th in the individual standings to a 24th-place finish
  • Amid a loaded field that included six teams ranked inside Golfweek's top 50, VCU earned a share of eighth place alongside Virginia Tech. The Rams were a combined 8-over, including 2-under during the second round
  • Third-ranked Wake Forest (-14) claimed a 1-stroke victory over No. 21 Louisville (-13)
  • Sophomores Kristian Tannum Donaldson and Sachin Kumar also finished inside the top 30 for VCU in 29th place. Tannum Donaldson also shot a second-round 70, racking up four birdies along the way
