The short story: Sophomore Sachin Kumar and junior Alston Newsom recorded top-10 finishes to lead VCU at Villanova's Wildcat Invitational.

FIRST TEE

  • Kumar was steady throughout the 54-hole event, carding 73-72-72 on the way to a share of seventh place. He registered four birdies in Sunday's final round, including three straight at one point
  • Newsom continued his breakout campaign with a 10th-place finish. Following an opening-round 76, he shot even par 71s in the final two rounds. He was 5-over for the tournament
  • Freshmen Adrian Vagberg (24th), Ian Peng (29th) and Cam Barackman (30th) rounded out VCU's top five
  • VCU made a late charge, firing 289 on the final day, best among the field. The Rams finished 23-over for the weekend, two strokes behind third-place Georgetown and three off the pace of second-place Delaware. Appalachian State collected the team title at 12-over

INSIDE THE SCORECARD

  • Kumar's success hinged largely on his play on par 5 holes. The VCU sophomore was 4-under on those holes during the tournament, which was third in the field
  • Newsom carded the second-most birdies in the field, 13, while Peng recorded nine for the Rams
  • Kumar registered one of two eagles in the tournament during Friday's first round on the par 5 17th
