The short story: VCU seniors Alister Balcombe and Daniel Stamper, playing in his first even as a Ram, booked top-20 finishes to lead the Black and Gold to a sixth-place effort at the season-opening Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate.

FIRST TEE

  • While Stamper was in the hunt in the tournament's early stages, it was Balcombe who closed with a flurry on Monday. Balcombe birdied five of his final 12 holes Monday on the way to a 3-under 69, which catapulted him 17 spots to 12th overall.
  • Stamper, who played for Alcorn State last season, tied for 18th in the field, shooting 75-77-76=229 over the two-day event.
  • Host Missouri (-20) ran away with the team title. UNC Wilmington (+30) claimed runner-up honors, followed by Boston College (+44), St. Peter's (+51), Cleveland State (+59) and VCU and Western Carolina (+60).
  • Senior Osama Khan overcame a first-round 82 and shot 72-75 in the final two rounds on the way to a 23rd-place finish for VCU.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Balcombe and Michael Stewart of St. Peter's led the tournament field in par 3 scoring (2.83). Balcombe birdied three of Turning Stone's four par 3 holes on Monday.
  • Stamper and Balcombe accounted for 17 of VCU's 27 birdies in the tournament.
  • Khan recorded par on 36 of 54 holes over the weekend.
