BALCOMBE PLACES EIGHTH AT RAIN-SHORTENED TAR HEEL

Tournament: Tar Heel Intercollegiate
Location: UNC Finley Golf Course (Chapel Hill, N.C.)
Course Info: Par 72, 7,242 Yards
VCU Finish: T-10th of 14 (+13)
Top Ram: Alister Balcombe T-8th (-2)

The short story: Junior Alister Balcombe had to wait out the rain, but when the skies cleared, he had booked his first top-10 finish in a VCU polo to lead the Rams at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate. The field played two rounds Friday and hoped to wrap up Sunday with a final round, but heavy rains brought by Hurricane Matthew left the course unplayable.

FIRST TEE
  • A transfer from Iowa Western Community College, Balcombe shot a 2-under 70 during Friday's first round and held firm with an even-par 72 in the afternoon's second round.
  • Balcombe caught fire midway through the first round after an early stumble. On his fourth hole of the day, the 469-yard par 4 15th, Balcombe carded a triple bogey. But he did not waver. The junior birdied five of his next 10 holes to vault into contention.
  • The Rams (+13) tied with Virginia Tech for 10th place overall. UNC Wilmington (-9) captured the team crown, followed by North Carolina (-6), UNC Greensboro and Maryland (-3).
  • Senior Jamie Clare carded a 1-under 71 in the second round and finished 2-over to take 30th place for the Rams. Hanish Nagrani (46th), Enej Sarkanj (68th) and Alston Newsom (76th) rounded out VCU's top five.
INSIDE THE SCORECARD
  • Balcombe's 28 pars were tied for the third-highest total in the field. He also recorded six birdies in the tournament.
  • VCU was particularly strong on par 4 holes. Balcombe, Clare and Nagrani were all even in those opportunities.
