THE BASICS
  • Brothers Adam and Matt Ball Jr. both placed in the top 10 to lead VCU to a runner-up finish at the River Landing Intercollegiate.
  • Host East Carolina shot 286 during Saturday's final round to rally for the team title. The Pirates (293-289-286=868) finished 4-over on the weekend. VCU (287-291-294=872) was four strokes off the pace. Tulsa (+9), Maryland (+16) and Campbell and Winthrop (+26) rounded out the top five.
  • Adam Ball shot 74 Saturday and was 1-under (70-71-74=215) for the 54-hole tournament. Matt Ball Jr., a senior, carded a 72 Saturday and tied for eighth at 1-over (70-75-72=217).
  • East Carolina's Wesley Conover (-4) claimed individual medalist honors.
  • Freshman Enej Sarkanj (+6) tied for 20th for VCU, while senior Rocky Khara (+8) tied for 22nd.
EXTRA STROKES
  • VCU now has four top-3 finishes this season, including a pair of victories.
  • For Adam Ball, a sophomore, it is his fourth top-5 finish of the 2013-14 season and his sixth in 16 career starts.
  • VCU topped a pair of Atlantic 10 Conference teams in the tournament, including crosstown rival Richmond, which was selected second in the preseason coaches poll. The Spiders (+36) placed eighth at River Landing. George Mason (+54) was 10th.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Rams will return home and take Richmond on Sunday, April 13 in the annual Black & Blue Cup, a match-play event, at Kinloch Golf Club in Manakin-Sabot. It will be VCU's final prep for the A-10 Tournament, while will be held April 25-27 in Coral Springs, Fla.
