UXBRIDGE, Ontario - Jake McNulty opened his summer break by closing out a victory.
The rising sophomore from Port Perry, Ontario fired a final-round 69 Monday to capture a one-stroke victory over Bryce Evon at the Investors Group Junior Spring Classic.
In his final 10 holes Monday, McNulty was 4-under. He eagled the 525-yard, par 5 tenth hole, then birdied No. 10, 14 and 17 on the back nine. His final round performance allowed him to ease to victory, despite Evon's strong closing effort. Evon, a Windsor, Ontario native, birdied three of his final five holes and shot 33 on the back nine, but couldn't hold off a hard-charging McNulty (72-75-69=216).
McNulty was one of three outstanding freshmen in this year's VCU Golf lineup. He posted a 75.38 scoring average in 11 starts in 2012-13 and shot a low round of 69 on two occasions. All five VCU starters are expected back in 2013-14 for the Rams, who placed second at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship earlier this month.
