LAREDO, Texas – Junior Marc Dobias (Lausanne, Switzerland) fired a final-round 70 Saturday and placed 11th overall to lead Virginia Commonwealth University at the Border Olympics at the Laredo Country Club. VCU placed ninth in the team standings among a competitive 16-team field.

Despite windy conditions on both days of play, Dobias (73-78-70=221) negotiated the Par 72, 7,319-yard layout admirably. With wind gusts ranging from 15 to 25 miles an hour Saturday morning, Dobias managed three birdies, including one on the 446-yard par 4 18th hole. He was 5-over for the two-day, 54-hole tournament, 10 strokes off the pace of individual champion M.J. Daffue of Lamar.
Sophomore Rocky Khara (Sebring, Fla.) and senior Chase Sargent (Orlando, Fla.) each tied for 45th overall at 13-over. Sophomore Matt Ball Jr. (Richmond, Va.) and senior Matt Smith (Lancaster, Pa.) were 60th and 71st, respectively.
Lamar (+6) captured the team title, followed by Baylor (+11), Houston (+24), Iowa State (+29) and Louisiana Tech and Louisiana Lafayette (+36), who tied for fifth.
The Rams will return to the links in two weeks, when they head to the Irish Creed Intercollegiate in Kannapolis, N.C. on March 31.
