BALANCED RAMS GRAB FOURTH AT AMELIA ISLAND INVITATIONAL

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – Senior Matt Smith (Lancaster, Pa.) placed 14th and sophomore Matt Ball Jr. (Richmond, Va.) fired a final-round 70 to lead Virginia Commonwealth University to one of its best finishes this fall at the Amelia Island Intercollegiate Tuesday at Amelia National Golf Club.

VCU shot 304 during Tuesday's final round and finished 12-over for the 54-hole tournament (286-286-304=876). It's the second time the Rams have placed fourth in a tournament this fall, matching their effort from the season-opening Marshall Invitational.

Host North Florida, ranked in the top ten by two different national polls, ran away with the team championship with a score of 21-under par. Texas A&M was second (-11), followed by Georgia Southern (+2).

Smith entered the day tied for third after 36 holes, but faded a bit on Tuesday. He was 3-over (72-67-80=219) for the tournament, including a blistering 67 in the second round.

Three other Rams, Ball, senior Chase Sargent (Orlando, Fla.) and Marc Dobias (Lausanne, Switzerland), tied for 18th place. Freshman Simon Taylor (Germany) was 42nd for VCU.

The Rams have completed the fall portion of their schedule. VCU will return to the links in 2012 with the Seahawk Intercollegiate Feb. 26-27 in Wilmington, N.C.
