MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University junior Marc Dobias (Lausanne, Switzerland) carded a final-round 71 to place 21st and led the Rams at the annual VCU Shootout Tuesday at Hermitage Country Club.

Dobias (75-69-71=215) finished 1-under for the 54-hole tournament, his second as a Ram. Dobias owes much of his success to his play on par 5s, where he was 6-under for the tournament. VCU senior Chase Sargent (Orlando, Fla.) placed 26th after firing 72 in three consecutive rounds on the par 72, 6,955-yard Manakin Course.
VCU placed 12th overall at 8-over (295-287-290=872), besting Colonial Athletic Association rivals UNC Wilmington (+12), Old Dominion (+14) and James Madison (+32).
Virginia (-27) cruised to the team crown, jumping out to a sizable lead early Tuesday before holding off a late charge by East Carolina (-20). Wichita State (-12) was third, followed by Iowa State (-10) and Virginia Tech (-9).
Iowa State's Scott Fernandez (-11) claimed individual medalist honors with back-to-back birdies on his final two holes to leapfrog Adam Stephenson (-10) of East Carolina. It's the second straight year that an Iowa State golfer has captured the individual title. Fernandez's teammate Nate McCoy won the Shootout in 2010.
Also for VCU, senior Matt Smith (Lancaster, Pa.) finished 53rd at 5-over (75-74-72=221), while sophomore Rocky Khara (Sebring, Fla.) was 63rd at 7-over (75-72-76=226).
VCU returns to the links Oct. 17-18 when it heads to Atlanta, Ga. for the Auto Trader Classic, hosted by Georgia State University.
