BURLINGTON, Iowa – Freshman Matt Ball Jr. (Richmond, Va.) fired a final-round 69 and finished 2-under par to lead VCU against a loaded field at the Golfweek Conference Challenge Tuesday at the Spirit Hollow Golf Course.
Ball tied for 17th overall with a three-round total of 214 (73-72-69) in his first collegiate tournament. The Rams placed 15th in the team standings with a total of 903 strokes (306-301-296).
Host Iowa (-31) dominated the tournament to run away with a 15-stroke victory over N.C. State (-16), followed by Liberty (-9), New Mexico (-6) and Baylor (-5), respectively.
|Junior Chase Sargent (Orlando, Fla.) followed ball in 51st place for the Rams at 9-over (73-79-73=225), while senior Mark Jargren (Helsingborg, Sweden) and juniors Matt Smith (Lancaster, Pa.) and Davis Garner (Washington Terrace, Utah) were 64th, 68th and 70th, respectively.
The Black and Gold return to the links when it hosts the VCU Shootout Sept. 27-28 at Hermitage Country Club in Richmond, Va. The Rams will host a field that includes Charlotte, Richmond, East Carolina, Iowa State, James Madison, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, Liberty, Virginia Tech, Mercer, Wake Forest, Old Dominion and Wichita State
