GRIFFIN LEADS VCU TO FIFTH AT RAIN-SHORTENED BRICKYARD COLLEGIATE

MACON, Ga. – Senior Lanto Griffin (Blacksburg, Va.) finished third at 4-under par to lead Virginia Commonwealth University to a fifth-place finish at the rain-shortened Brickyard Collegiate Championship at the Brickyard at Riverside.

The tournament was called after 36 holes when heavy rain washed out Monday's final round shortly after it began.

Griffin covered the 7,175-yard, Par 72 course in a 3-under 69 during Saturday's opening round. He carded a 1-under 71 on Sunday to finish with a two-day total of 140, one stroke behind John Tyler Griffin of Georgia Tech and six behind individual champion Russell Henley of Georgia.

VCU shot 291 and 293 for a 36-hole total of 584, 5-over par. Augusta State ran away with the team title, firing a two-round total of 563, 13-under par. Clemson and Chattanooga tied for second at even par. Georgia was fourth at 3-over.

The Rams bested a number of ranked teams with their top-five finish, including No. 6 Florida State, No. 15 North Florida, No. 18 Michigan and No. 19 Georgia Tech.

"For the most part, we played pretty good," VCU Head Coach Matt Ball said. "We played 33 holes pretty darn solid. We were really close to being tied for second."

Also for the Rams, senior Rafael Campos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) tied for 21st at 1-over (74-71—145), while classmate Vincent Nadeau (Penhook, Va.) tied for 28th at 2-over (73-73—146).

VCU concludes Fall play when it travels to the UNC Greensboro Bridgestone Classic at the Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. Oct. 24-25.
