GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Seniors Rafael Campos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and Vincent Nadeau (Penhook, Va.) booked top-15 finishes to lead Virginia Commonwealth University to an eighth place showing at the 2010 Desert Shootout at the Palm Valley Golf Club.
The Rams shot a 7-over 295 during Saturday's final round of the 54-hole tournament. VCU finished 2-over with 866 strokes, four behind Xavier (-2) and five away from Nebraska (-5).
Campos carded a 1-over 73 on Saturday to finish 3-under (70-70-73=213) for the weekend, good for 11th place. Nadeau also shot 73 and placed 13th at 2-under (72-69-73=214). Sophomores Chase Sargent (Orlando, Fla.) and Evan Boyer (Raleigh, N.C.) placed 42nd overall. Boyer was registered as an individual for the tournament and did not factor in the team scoring.
Scoring at the tournament was tight, with the top seven spots separated by seven strokes. Wichita State (-9) topped Kansas in a playoff for the team title. Eastern Michigan, which led after two rounds, placed third (-6). BYU (-5) was fourth, followed by Pacific (-4).
Wichita State's Dustin Garza (68-65-69=202) earned individual medalist honors firing three sub-70 rounds to finish 14-under.
VCU will return to action April 2-3 when it travels to Wallace, N.C. and the River Landing Golf Club for the River Landing Intercollegiate.
