RALEIGH, N.C. – Senior Lanto Griffin (Blacksburg, Va.) shot a 1-under 70 during Saturday's final round and finished in a four-way tie for second place to spark Virginia Commonwealth University at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate at N.C. State's Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
Griffin's final round left him within a shot of individual medalist Adam Long of Duke. Long carded a 3-under 68 on Saturday to vault from 12th to first. Griffin started the day in sixth place, but managed five birdies during the final 18 to move up the leaderboard. The Rams' senior managed a three-round total of 215 (77-68-70), including a dazzling 3-under 68 in Friday's second round.
VCU finished eighth in a stacked field that included No. 10 Florida State, No. 16 Georgia Tech, No. 20 Virginia and No. 26 Duke. The Rams logged a three-day score of 890, leaving them two shots behind Coastal Carolina, three behind Georgia Tech and five strokes in back of fifth-place Purdue.
Senior Rafael Campos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) placed 48th at 13-over (79-73-74=226) while junior Mark Jargren (Helsingborg, Sweden) and sophomore Chase Sargent (Orlando, Fla.) tied for 51st at 13-over.
The Rams will return to action April 16-18 when they head to the Colonial Athletic Association Championships at The Homestead's Upper Cascades in Hot Springs, Va.
