The VCU field hockey team put together one of their most successful seasons in school history this past fall. VCU's 13 wins tied for second most in school history, and the team qualified for the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2004.

A key part to the Rams successes was freshman Rymme van Dessel, who received Second Team All-CAA, and All-Rookie team honors. On top of that van Dessel, was named the CAA Rookie of the Year. VCU Athletics Student Assistant Andrew Phillips, caught up with van Dessel to see what keeps her busy off of the turf.

AP: Why did you decide to come VCU?
RVD: My sisters Marle and Flore van Dessel were already playing for VCU for three years, and both of them really liked it here. I always wanted to be on the same team as them, and because of all that I decided to play for VCU as well.

AP: What does it mean, to you, to be a part of a team that has helped restore VCU's Field Hockey tradition?
RVD: It means a lot for me, especially because my sisters are a big part of rebuilding this program. It was fun to see how everyone underestimated us in the beginning, but now they have to take VCU field hockey serious again.

AP: Who influenced you, and your sisters to get involved with field hockey?
RVD: Our mom, definitley. She played field hockey for 39 years.

AP: What is your favorite place on VCU's campus and why?
RVD: Cary Street field for sure. I have spent so many hours there, and I have really good memories of that field!

AP: If you could play another sports team at VCU, what would it be?
RVD: Probably soccer, but I am really bad at playing soccer so I don't think they would be happy to have me on their team.

AP: If you could go on a vacation to any place in the world, where would you go?
RVD: I would love to go back to South Africa, but if I had to choose a country I have never been to, then I would like to go to Australia.

AP: Who is your funniest teammate?
RVD: That's a hard question. I like Marle and Flore's humor because it is similar to mine but when Erin Jablonski starts laughing, it is hard for me to not start laughing with her.

AP: If you could have dinner with any three people who would they be and why?
RVD: I would have dinner with my teammates Stephanie DeMasi, Kelsey O'Brien, and Emilie Soares. Our dinners on Thursday evening are the best and I would not want to switch their company for some famous people.
