RICHMOND, Va. – Riding a 4-0 week where they defeated Longwood and swept La Salle to open their Atlantic 10 slate, the VCU Rams were given much recognition by the conference. Sean Thompson and Paul Witt were each recognized for their weeks, as Thompson earned Pitcher of the Week honors, while Witt was named Co-Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
Thompson led VCU to a series-opening victory over La Salle Friday night with a 13-strikeout complete game performance. The right-hander from Indiana, Pa., gave up seven hits, only one run, and did not walk any La Salle batters. He picked up the win, his team-high fourth victory of the season.
Witt, an infielder from Harper’s Ferry, W.Va., hit .412 on the week in four games, collecting seven hits in 17 at bats with six RBI and a run scored. He also added a double and a walk as well in helping the Rams to a perfect 4-0 week. He currently leads the team in batting average, hitting .404 on the season.
Rhode Island senior Mike Corin was named A-10 Player of the Week, while Fordham freshman Alvin Melendez was named Co-Rookie of the Week along with Witt.
